Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Going on a first date can be a little bit nerve wracking. My housemate Keun Young, went on a first date last year, and you can just imagine her hopes beforehand:

I hope he likes me

I hope he dresses well

I hope I don’t spill spaghetti on my dress

I hope I like him

I hope I don’t end up driving his car, and accidentally pressing the accelerator instead of the brake on his new, fully electric BMW, sending it careering at speed into a stationary parked car.

I hope the restaurant does beef.

I hope he still likes me after the AA is called out to tow his new flashy company car.

Yes Keun Young drove and crashed Matt’s car on their first date.

Hopes can sometimes be dashed in a split second. I know many of us, like myself, might have experienced this over the last year. But, as the hopes I had disappear, I’ve been brought back to another hope.

As a Christian my hope is in Jesus, who the bible describes as a “living hope”. For me: God, who lived among us and promised that “I am with you each and every day”; and said in his last moments to a criminal dying beside him, “today you will be with me in paradise.”

After Keun Young’s driving incompetence crashed Matt’s car on their first date, you might expect, that any hope of them staying together would disappear. But cool story: Keun Young and Matt got MARRIED yesterday. It was beautiful, I was a groomsman, I got a cheeky dance with a bridesmaid, talk to me. So congratulations Matt and Keun Young.

But Keun Young’s dashed hope for a good first date, was only a part of a much larger hope: that she might find someone to spend her life with. Having hope in things like first dates, is good, but I think these hopes are also flimsy; fragile reflections of a much bigger hope: that life will turn out ok, that I’ll be significant, that I’ll be loved.

For me through all the broken hopes of the last year, I’ve come to depend more on a living hope: Jesus with me. God, who has good plans for my life, and ultimately offers… paradise.

A first date car crash transformed into a wedding.
