Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

I know that I’ve mentioned in the last two weeks that I’ve just got married but if you’ll indulge me for one last time there is one thing about our wedding that I want to share – and it’s got something to do with abandoning yourself to love.

We had decided on several things which would make the ceremony surprising and unique but some things, like Judithcoming down the aisle to a lovely piece by Handel, were kinda traditional. Well, blow me, but did the minister not start the service by announcing “Ladies and gentlemen - a slight change to the printed order of service, and instead, I give you…the bride!” Cue a guitar playing and…Judith singing Mama Cass’s ‘It’s Getting Better,’ one of ‘our songs.’

And so she processed down the aisle, microphone in hand, singing this wonderful love song to me. I turned round and gazed on this amazing woman doing this amazing thing and as we looked at each other, that was it - she could barely hold it together, I could barely hold it together, all our family and friends could barely hold it together….even the cake was in tiers! (really, I should have resisted that one…)

That was the start of our wedding. That was the start of our married life. I was, and am still, so moved and thrilled – and that’s what can happen when you abandon yourself to someone’s love. You get bowled over, you get something wonderful!

Now, as ever, I’m making the rather short leap to what I believe about God’s love. What happens if I abandon myself to what God thinks is a great way to do life…what happens if I forgive people, what happens if I give my money away, what happens if I stop being so self-centred, and selfish, and proud. What would it be like if I turned the other cheek, or volunteered my time for a charity, what would happen if I prayed, lived a simpler lifestyle, got agitated about the planet, encouraged others, did random acts of kindness and loved people, really loved them…

Well, I guess I know the answer to all of that: I’d get all choked up, filled with love, and I’d start singing, “It’s getting better”!
