The first medals of the games were awarded in shooting, while the men’s cycling road race winner was crowned after a gruelling 234km course that included a stretch on the slopes of Mount Fuji.
Max Whitlock and his British teammates were competing in the men’s team gymnastics, while medals were also awarded in archery, fencing, judo, shooting and taekwondo.
