Peggy begins to wonder if she has done the right thing and Helen comes to the rescue.

Apologetic Susan’s running late. She explains to Helen her recent mistake at the shop. Helen later finds Susan looking upset. Susan feels she should resign, as she’s not doing her job properly, but Helen is determined to help and says to take some compassionate leave from the dairy and focus on her family.

Jennifer affectionately ‘spies’ on Alice as she visits Chris and Martha. Peggy is wary of the idea of Alice having Martha on her own but sympathises as Jennifer worries that she has lost her daughter. Peggy assures her the real Alice is still there.

Alice and Chris awkwardly bond over Martha as he describes the little developments Alice has missed. Alice insists she’s getting better and hopes the two of them will get back together soon but Chris says to focus on herself – nothing’s changed between them. Later Alice speaks up – they were both heavy drinkers, and while Alice admits she is ill, she’s getting better. She can’t stand having Chris watching her like a hawk with Martha. Alice is convinced that Chris wants to be single and rid of her. Realising Alice may be drunk right now, he tells her to get out. She will see Martha when he says she can.

Jennifer shares her despair with Peggy that Chris was enabling Alice’s drinking and that she didn’t spot what was happening. Peggy tries to tell Jennifer that she knew about Alice, but Jennifer is distracted by seeing Alice in tears leaving Ambridge View.
