Edith Bowman, Olly Alexander and Jay's Virtual Radio Quiz

Edith Bowman tells Zoe about hosting this year's BAFTA Awards. Olly Alexander has new music from Years & Years and Jay Flynn is back with another round of his Virtual Radio Quiz.

Edith Bowman tells Zoe about hosting this year's BAFTA Awards and the latest on her Soundtracking Podcast. This year the BAFTAs are split over two nights: Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th April. Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary will be hosting the main show on Sunday at 7pm on BBC One at the Royal Albert Hall. Edith and Dermot are taking over from previous hosts Graham Norton and Joanna Lumley. They will be joined by a panel of to-be-announced guests with others tuning in from Los Angeles. All the other winners and nominees will attend virtually alongside an entirely virtual audience. In her podcast Soundtracking with Edith Bowman, she interviews the biggest names in film about the importance of music in their life and work, their musical influences and how they use music in their films. You can gain insider knowledge from the best in the film industry – from actors, directors, producers and composers.

Olly Alexander, the actor and singer-songwriter, has brand new music. ‘Starstruck’ is the new single from Years & Years and their first new track since 2018’s much-loved second album ‘Palo Santo’, and follows hot on the heels of Olly Alexander’s leading role in Channel 4's huge show, ‘It’s A Sin’; which has broken all records on All 4 since its premiere in January, with over 18 million views to date (the platform’s biggest ever instant box-set) and an incredible reception from fans and critics alike.

Jay Flynn returns with another round of his Virtual Radio Quiz where he tests the team on their general knowledge to see who comes out on top.

Along with Adam Porter on news, Richie Anderson on travel and Mike Williams on sport, she and the team have the best start to your morning. With celeb guests, quizzes, headlines, tunes chosen by listeners, and more music that you can shake a glitterball at!

There's also a daily Pause For Thought with Steve Chalke and listeners on the line, as Zoe entertains the nation with fun for the family!

Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Good news for Chocoholics. The eggs might be gone, but Easter is still not done! There are, in fact, two Easters; ours – the Western version – and the second, celebrated by the Eastern half of the Church, which doesn’t happen until May 2nd. So, for all those who love Easter, there’s the excuse to do it all again next month.

I love Easter – and not just for the eggs. Every year it inspires me. Let me explain.

In my late teens, I met a girl. But her parents disapproved of me and prevented her from seeing me. I’m mixed race, and my face didn’t fit. Because of my ‘Anglo-Indian-ness’, they felt that if their daughter fell in love with me – and we married – our children might be, as they put it to me, ‘throwbacks’. That judgement destroyed my fragile sense of self-confidence like nothing I’d ever experienced before. I was stuck with no way forward.

Months later, still depressed by the curse of those words, I found myself listening to a preacher explain the famous Easter story. “It was Friday” he bellowed, “Jesus’ face didn’t fit. He was betrayed, crucified and buried in a cave, behind a HUGE stone. The story was over”. He paused, but then thundered “Sunday was coming! A small group of Jesus’ close friends - headed down to his tomb, just to pay their last respects. To their surprise that giant rock had been rolled away. Jesus’ tomb was empty, and they are greeted with the message that he was alive; somehow risen from the dead!”

I was transfixed. My girlfriend’s parent’s rejection had floored me. But, now suddenly – inexplicably – I felt like the huge barrier they’d placed in front of me had somehow been ‘rolled away’. Their attitude had blocked my future, but suddenly I had hope. Lots of it. And that sense has never left me since.

So, that’s it. Every year Easter inspires me again. Jesus walked out of that tomb. The stone designed to stop him was rolled away. But it’s a challenge too; to keep doing my bit to build a more inclusive society, one where no one ever feels that their face doesn’t fit; one where we ensure that the stones and barriers erected to destroy hope are rolled away.
