Mica Paris, one of the most respected British female soul singers, chats to Amol Rajan about her brand new album 'gospel'. This album is a passion project for Mica who has always wanted to record a gospel album. Mica was brought up on gospel music and sang in her south London church in Lewisham every weekend with her grandparents. Following the success of ‘Gospel According to Mica: The Story of Gospel Music in Six Songs’ on the BBC earlier this year Mica began recording the album with the Soul Sanctuary Gospel Choir for Warner Music. The documentary saw Mica trace gospel’s journey through six songs from the American south all the way to 2019 when Stormzy performed Blinded By Your Grace Part II in his Glastonbury headline set. Since scoring her first Top 10 Hit in 1988 with ‘My One Temptation’ Mica has since gone onto release six more albums, published a book and became a popular media personality, from hosting her own Radio 2 soul show, a panelist on ITV’s Loose Women, to more recently - an addition to the cast of EastEnders where she is playing Ellie Nixon, grandmother to Phil and Denise’s adopted baby Raymond. Despite being a villainous character, Mica says she can relate to Ellie saying, “Ellie’s a formidable woman, whose past tragedy has made her stronger – that’s definitely something I can identify with.”
Amy Macdonald also chats to Amol about her new album 'The Human Demands'. Amy has had huge success as a singer-songwriter with four top five studio albums across Europe as well as two number ones in the UK and three in Germany. To date, for all four albums, Amy has been awarded platinum status 12 times with over 6 million sales. She has played to 4 million people worldwide, including over 1 million in the UK alone. Her debut album ’This Is The Life’ charted at number 1 in five markets around the globe including the UK and it was one of the top 20 best selling albums of the decade in Germany. The album was in the European charts for over a year.

Pause For Thought

At the start of the year I write a list of some of the things I’d like to achieve during the 365 days that follow. I had a look at my list the other day and started to feel an overwhelming sense of failure. I wasn’t anywhere near achieving half of the goals I had written down. I can be quite tough on myself and I’m working on that. I’m a new dad and a few days ago I had a father son day which I had carefully planned out. I planned to do a zoom call during his morning nap, then take him to soft play, and then a walk in the park, and then back home. I had his food and milk all planned out too.
Come the day, my son wakes up earlier than usual from his nap, the zoom overruns because someone was late, then when we leave for soft play he falls asleep in the car and doesn’t want to wake up when we get there, and in my hurry I brought the wrong snacks from home. It was just one of those days where I felt like I was so off the mark. Failures and imperfections are a part of life so it’s a wonder that I beat myself up when I encounter them. I like to pray a lot and one of the reasons is because it gives me comfort to know that there’s someone more capable, that has my best interests at heart. Another reason is that a lot of my insecurities in my life come from the fact that I haven’t gained what I had hoped to. You know….maybe I haven’t grown as a dad, or as a husband, or maybe I haven’t gained a bigger bank account or career path.
When people ask me what I gain from praying, to be honest sometimes the answers nothing. But I can tell you what I lose. I can lose anger, I can lose ego, I can lose un forgiveness, insecurity, and I can lose fear. Sometimes life isn’t always about gaining. Sometimes it’s about losing. Which ultimately is the gain. So even though I’ve got quite a bit to tick off my annual list, when I look at what I’ve lost, I’m not doing too bad after all.
