Good Vibrations
Good Vibrations takes the transformative power of music into prisons. They use the Indonesian gamelan, a magnificent set of gongs, drums and xylophones to help prisoners build trust in others and confidence in themselves. Good Vibrations supports them to grow their team working and communication skills and to discover just what they can achieve.
A difficult start

About a quarter of prisoners grew up in care and a third have experienced abuse. Young offenders are often very vulnerable and have little or no guidance. Many women in prison are trapped in a cycle of abuse. It’s crucial to help them see and believe in their own potential so they can make positive changes.
Errol’s story

Errol grew up in care. He saw crime as the only way of expressing his anger. Playing gamelan helped him learn to co-operate, communicate and experience harmony with other people. He says “I now realise I’m at my most impactful when I choose not to kick off and show compassion instead. Good Vibrations helps me keep on track.”
Impact

Good Vibrations helps break the cycle of re-offending and gives prisoners the tools and confidence to forge more positive self-identities. Their work creates a culture of shared responsibility and leadership. This supports social and communication skills, mental wellbeing, a sense of pride and hope for the future.
