Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Steve Chalke, minister, speaker and social entrepreneur:
Last Saturday I decided to it was time to clean out my car. Why? Well… It was back just before lockdown. I had an early morning meeting – for which I set out, in my newish car, in plenty of time. All was well. Then it rained – in sheets. I could hardly see where I was going. That’s when it happened. I hit a pothole. I had a flat tyre. I pulled over. I looked at my watch. I had to be at my destination in 45 minutes. I got out. I ran to the boot. I searched for the spare. It wasn’t there. WHAT A JOKE! I was drenched. I rang emergency breakdown. I GOT A MACHINE. ALL I WANTED WAS A HUMAN VOICE. But, when I did, I got a never-ending series of irrelevant questions…eating up precious time. ‘ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS, WHERE IS MY SPARE TYRE’, I shouted. “You don’t have one”, the voice at the other end of the phone replied, calmly. “You have a puncture repair kit instead…they’re easier and quicker than replacing a wheel”. A PUNCTURE REPAIR KIT!
“Ugh!!!”. I striped the boot. I was frantic. Eventually I found it; a bottle that said ‘sealant’ with a hose that looked like it might fit onto the valve of my flat tyre. I did it. I squeezed it. I shook it. IT DIDN’T WORK. So, I drove on my flat tyre to the next garage, by which time I’d also ruined my wheel. From there I hitchhiked and reached my meeting, with moments to spare, soaked to the skin. Last Saturday, sorting out my boot, I came across a small electric pump right next to where I’d found the bottle that never worked. On it were some instructions: ‘To inflate tyre, attach to sealant bottle, plug into car cigarette lighter socket, turn on your engine and inflate tyre.’ Ugh!!! “The truth will set you free”, once promised Jesus. What he didn’t say, however, is facing the truth about myself would be easy.
Though it’s rather hard to admit it, I’m still learning that the more anxious I am, the more stupid I become. My thinking brain tends to lose control, and my emotional brain leaves me behaving irrationally. Or, to end with a driving metaphor, when I’m stressed or angry, I behave a little like a fast car with very poor brakes.
