Douglas Henshall reads Sam Hanna Bell’s iconic tale of love and high adventure in a Scottish settler community in 17th-century Ulster.
After a perilous journey across the narrow sea, Neil and the MacIlveens make their way to the settlement established by Kenneth Echlin, the Laird of Ravara, a soldier, returned from Virginia. The MacIlveens are given a house and land to work. Neil is offered employment, it seems he has made a favourable impression on the Laird, though not on his wife, Seraphina.
