There’s a shock in store for Kate while Lilian considers her relationships with those closest to her
Lilian’s happy Justin’s attention is being held by the family tree record book given to him by James. He’s busy in the study researching parish records, finding amusement in the bankruptcy of a cousin. It gives Lilian a chance to go and see to the horses, and just as importantly keeps Justin out of the kitchen. Whilst lunging Aziz she ponders on how well her nieces and nephews are keeping in touch with her – unlike her son James, who she hasn’t had a proper conversation with in ages. She’s flattered that Kate has confided her news, and gratified she’s been able to offer the benefit of her wisdom.
Kate’s discovered she’s begun the approach to menopause. Shocked and saddened, she agonises over whether to tell Jakob. He was so thrilled when he thought he might become a father. What if he leaves her? But Jakob accepts her news with his scientist’s pragmatism. He’s relieved it’s nothing serious. It makes no difference to his feelings for her; he loves Kate. After some of the useless advice and comments from her female relatives, his advice to accept the process and go with nature is like gold for Kate. He’s got it so right. She decides her next project will be yoga for the menopause!
