This week's wines
Creole gumbo with cornbread
Marquesa de la Cruz Garnacha Rosé, 2019, Spain
Waitrose, £7.99
Spanish rosado works especially well with spicy dishes like Shivi’s because they are bolder in flavour as well as colour to stand up to the heat. Avoid anything too pale or you’ll get a bitter taste. A safe bet is a Rioja Rosado. If you can’t find a Spanish rosado, Chilean or Argentinean rosé is the way to go, darker colours for fuller flavours.
Nectarine puff tart with cinnamon and rum cream
Finest Dessert Semillon, 2015, Australia
Tesco, £6
Great news - late harvest semillon from Australia is one of the most undervalued sweet wines in the world. The one I have chosen won Great Value Champion Sweet 2019 at the International Wine challenge and pretty much every supermarket sells one, own labels are definitely the greatest value of all. If you have trouble finding one, look for sweet Muscat such as St Jean de Minervois from France which is also good value and delish with desserts.
