Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought
From Tom Cozens, a presenter and director.
If you were sat opposite me right now you might see the large, almost perfectly ‘y’ shaped scar on my forehead. What you wouldn’t see are the mean names I got called, like ‘y-fronts’, or ‘Yarry Potter’, or being asked ‘why’ whenever I said anything, which was annoying at first but eventually gave me a more philosophical outlook on life How did I get the scar? Well, what I’ll say is, if your mum says don’t jump on the brown rocks, the first thing you do should not be to jump on the brown rocks, especially if they’re around 5 hours from a Norwegian hospital by tiny rubber dinghy and car. In the rush to reach the hospital we forgot to detach the caravan, so its insides including mirrors and crockery had been destroyed, in a similar way, I guess, to my forehead which needed a lot of stitches. I’d hit my head so hard, I’d mucked up my teeth and it was agony to try and chew anything. I have this distinctive memory of my mother cutting up my burger into tiny burger cubes which each had a tiny bit of meat, lettuce, sauce and bun, which I would swallow without chewing. Thanks Mum. So when I: little 8 year old Tom started chomping solid food again I remember being really thankful for it, I remember thanking God for my first proper sandwich.
That was 23 years ago, and just yesterday, I was thankful for a dog I’ve nicknamed Terrence who always barks at me when I run past him on my evening runs, like a beacon of familiarity. I also thank God for the chain around Terrence’s neck, because I’m pretty sure he wants to eat me. Thankfulness, or gratitude is a practice which I try to live out.
And With so many people in the UK now searching google for “how to pray” , perhaps the discipline of thankfulness will make a resurgence, because not only is it one of the primary ways I connect with God in prayer, but research has shown that regularly expressing gratitude changes the molecular structure of the brain making us measurably healthier and happier! But I guess the question you might be asking is…am I thankful for my scar. Well, yesterday I noticed I have some forehead wrinkles, but, thankfully, my scar cuts through the middle of them, making them less prominent. So the answer is yes. Kind-of.
