Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
21 years ago today, The Good Friday, agreement was signed. The Northern Ireland peace deal was born from secret discussions, followed by two years of talks, and 36 hours of intense final negotiations. I’m old enough to remember The Troubles that The Good Friday Agreement put an end to. I can remember London not feeling safe, and not being allowed to go Christmas shopping in town because my mum was scared of the bombs. And she had good reason to be. The violence felt ever present. Indeed, my friend Laura was saved from the 1981 Chelsea Barracks Bomb as she had turned a different corner to put her neighbour’s rubbish away.
So I welcomed The Good Friday Agreement with joy, and indeed value work that values peace. Benjamin Franklin said, "There never was a good war, or a bad peace." But peace is hard won, and takes courage. Tonight, I will speak at St James’s Church in Piccadilly, at an Interfaith event reflecting on the massacre of 50 worshippers at a mosque in New Zealand. People from all faiths and none, are coming together to say this is not the world we want!
Yet, people have openly justified the New Zealand massacre. Messages such as “an eye for an eye”, and “a taste of your own medicine” have been seen on social media. For me, we arrive at violence when we stop seeing each other as humans, and instead start to see each other by labels. When we only see each other in terms of difference. When “us” excludes “them”. Depressingly, when the New Zealand massacre took place I was not surprised. I know from my day to day experiences of anti-Muslim hatred that such an event was a “when” not an “if”, which to be frank, just added to the pain of seeing fellow humans killed.
Most of us won’t be part of any large peace initiative such as the Good Friday Agreement. I believe we can however call out hate wherever we see it. We can make our personal spaces – on and off line – places where we value our fellow humans. I believe we can all do our bit for peace.
