Jim has some harsh words and Leonard has a confession to make.
At the Stables Shula has engaged Leonard to paint some of her horses in exchange for a donation to the church’s pay for a favour scheme. Jill’s surprised to find that Leonard has made very little progress after an hour – he’d only attempted the grass. Leonard is forced to come clean and admits that he’s not a proper painter at all and that he bought Jill’s snowdrops painting after his ended up looking like little lamp-posts. Jill finds the whole situation very funny.
Jim and Leonard discuss Rosie’s christening; Jim thinks the only good thing about the day was Toby’s coughing. Later at Grey Gables health club Jim bumps into Shula who’s off for a swim. Jim and Shula discuss her failed attempt at giving a sermon. Shula admits that she felt like a hypocrite standing at the pulpit. She thought Jim might be pleased at seeing her struggle. But Jim congratulates Shula on her honesty. She confides she’s not sure of anything at the moment. It feels like the ground’s no longer solid beneath her feet, so she needs to think it all through on her own.
