Hosts Japan had won at least one gold or silver medal in the men’s singles event each year since 2011, whilst their individual female skaters had also won a plethora of medals in recent years, including silver and bronze in 2018, so a partisan crowd and an electric atmosphere was guaranteed for the sport’s annual showpiece competition.
