Giving little while expecting a lot - the public and the church

All take and very little give? Is the church expected to provide for the high days and holy days with little support for the everydays? As church attendance falls, so too does the collection yet the parish still has to be there for life's big events, baptism, confirmation, weddings and funerals. Does the public take the church for granted and should consideration be given to state funding?
