Even though he is on leave, Ian is thinking of going into Grey Gables because Joey's first day in charge of the restaurant didn't go well. Adam implores him to stay away and have a proper break. Meanwhile, they disagree over how to approach surrogacy. Ian is unsure about trusting a complete stranger but, after what happened with Madds, Adam is wary of asking a friend.

Later Ian meets Helen for coffee. Helen suggests that she could be their surrogate, although she wouldn't donate an egg. Mindful of her past experiences, Ian is amazed at her offer. Helen promises to give it serious consideration.

Adam is not impressed when Ian relays Helen's suggestion of being their surrogate. He thinks it would be a terrible idea, and would go horribly wrong. Ian thinks she would be perfect and they would be stupid to turn her down. At Bridge Farm, Pat has misgivings, especially after Helen's pre-eclampsia. And, having already faced the prospect of losing her children, could she really give up a baby? Helen firmly tells Pat that the decision is hers to make.
