Susan's hopes are shattered, and Ed feels overlooked.

Tom summons Clarrie and Susan to a meeting. With Johnny working at home farm he needs to make some staffing changes, and give them a "more varied in-work experience". Susan takes this to mean that one of them, hopefully her, will be sent on a fermented foods course. Much to Susan's disappointment, Tom actually wants them to work in the polytunnels. She bitterly complains to Clarrie that her talents are being wasted.

Ed is furious to discover that Johnny is working at Home Farm. He's always dropped everything for them, and expected to be asked first about extra work. Adam apologises, but points out that Johnny approached him. Realising that as an apprentice Johnny will be cheaper than him, Ed declares that he's got the message - he's obviously too expensive.

Ian is pleased to discover that there will be a woman at the birthday party on Thursday who might be interested in being a surrogate again. Adam is non-committal, and returns home from his confrontation with Ed in a bad mood. He thinks he handled it badly. And he is overwhelmed by how quickly the surrogacy plans are moving. But he reassures Ian that he loves him, and won't let him down.
