Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim Lifestyle Magazine

I have this habit. I call it my bag habit…

When I go shopping I always take the receipt and stick it in my handbag. I also like to carry tissues. This is a mum thing... it’s always important to have tissues for your children, even if mine are now 21, 17, and 15! Pens... you can never have too many pens. Then of course there are the pieces of paper. I’m not even going to discuss the amount of paper I carry around.

Now I carry this stuff on a daily basis, but eventually it gets too much. So I go into my bag and take out its contents, minus the things which I actually need - phone, travel card, purse and keys - and the rest I shove into a carrier bag. I’ve been doing this for years! Sometimes I’ll find a bag which has receipts in it that tell me the price of a loaf of bread is 30p.

I chastise myself of course. “Sarah, you have to sort this out because one day you’ll not have the energy to go through all these bags.”

But I actually think the problem maybe about more than tissues, and paper, and receipts - these things are the physical “stuff” I don’t find time to sort. Are there also all those unresolved, untidy, thoughts and emotions which I have stuffed into metaphorical carrier bags because I didn’t have time to sort things out?

Yep – there are those too! And it’s this clutter which is really a problem, because that clutter—when I rarely tell people when they’ve hurt me, or I haven’t asked for someone to help me, or I feel I’ve failed those I love because I couldn’t fix things—gets in the way of profound relationships, including my relationship with The Divine.

Decluttering one’s bag or home of physical things is necessary. But I reckon so is decluttering one’s heart. Shedding the mistakes and finding self-forgiveness. Throwing out the grudges and forgiving others.

I know I have to find time to sort through my bags of physical stuff—the accumulation of living a pretty frenetic life. But I also know I have to find time to sort out the “me stuff” too.

The Prophet advised to clear out one’s heart every evening. It’s an ideal, but it feels like one worth aspiring to.
