Archbishop Cranmer has asked Shardlake to conduct a secret hunt for a serial killer who is enacting, through a series of gory tableaux, a prophecy from the Book of Revelation.
Though the extraordinary events at the seventh victim's house in Hertfordshire suggest that the prophecy is fulfilled, Shardlake is convinced that the killer has one final, terrible act planned and that it somehow involves Catherine Parr.
