Jill puts her foot down, and it is feeling cramped at Bridge Farm.

Johnny asks David to be on Tom's mock interview panel. Johnny wants the panel to be tough on Tom. David and Ruth have an idea of who else might be good - Brian.

Johnny tells Pat he has a plan to make Bridge Farm less cramped, he can move out.

It's Jill's eighty-sixth birthday and everyone at Brookfield is looking forward to her birthday tea. Pip tells Ruth that Toby is coming. Ruth isn't sure if that's a good idea but Pip can't see why it would be a problem, Toby's her boyfriend and everyone knows him. When Carol arrives, she comments on the mountains of cake. Pip says Toby will be able to polish them off but Jill says she doesn't want him to be there. David tries to intervene but Jill is adamant that Toby isn't invited. An upset Pip leaves but Jill remains steadfast.

Ruth comforts Pip who can't understand Jill's dislike of Toby. She has always been able to talk to her grandmother about boyfriends but not this one. David and Ruth reflect on Jill's outburst over Toby and try to fathom why she takes against Pip's boyfriend so strongly. They hope Jill's tantrum was just a one off.
