Friday Night is Music Night - Twang: The Great Instrumental Hits

Ken Bruce presents a Friday Night concert that celebrates the great instrumentals records that topped the British charts. Yes - tunes that proved you don't need a vocalist to get to the top. Richard Balcombe conducts the orchestra in a selection that includes - Love's Theme by Barry White; Song for Guy by Elton John; Stranger on the Shore by Acker Bilk; The Hustle by Van McCoy; Telstar by the Tornados; Chariots of Fire by Vangelis and Bill Whelan's Riverdance. Tunes that reached the coverted number one spot included Eye Level by Simon Park and Ennio Morricone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

We'll salute some of the guitar greats including the King of Twang - Duane Eddy, Gary Moore and, of course, The Shadows.

There's even a couple of classical tunes that made the chart - aided by their popularity as television signatures tunes - Shostakovitch's Romance from the Gadfly which reached the heady heights of number 2 in 1983 when it was used in ITV's Reilly Ace of Spies and Khachaturian's Adagio from Spartacus as used in BBC TV's The Onedin Line was the big Christmas hit of 1971.
