The first black footballer to play for Liverpool has turned down the chance to be nominated for an MBE, saying it would be "a kick in the teeth" to Africans who suffered at the hands of the British Empire. In his only radio interview, Howard Gayle has told us he declined the opportunity to be put forward for an MBE for his work with the Show Racism the Red Card campaign, because of what his ancestors went through as part of the slave trade.
