2. On the Way to Salisbury

Inspired by a view on his trip to Cornwall, Stevens ponders the qualities of what makes a great butler. Read by John Moffatt.

1956: Salisbury - Stevens is making his way to Cornwall to visit former housekeeper, Miss Kenton.

Earlier, he stopped to take in a breath-taking view of the English countryside.

Stevens is looking back on a lifetime of service as butler in one of the great stately homes of England.

Coming to the end of his career, he belatedly puts his life into perspective.
