Some animals have turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. The giraffe has a stretched neck that has intrigued us for centuries, while the chameleon has an elongated tongue that was once thought to be the work of the devil. Nature can baffle us so much we don't believe what we see. The discovery of the platypus so confused the greatest thinkers of Victorian Europe, some questioned whether it was even real. And in the 1920s, a toad became the centre of a scientific storm causing accusations of fakery.
