Personal Support Unit (PSU)
The PSU helps those who cannot afford a lawyer and are facing court alone. In civil and family courts, where people risk losing their home, going bankrupt or losing the right to see their children, trained PSU volunteers give practical help and emotional support, enabling people to take control of their case. It's daunting going to court alone. Many who come to the PSU are battling difficult personal circumstances: 37% are unemployed, one in four speaks English as a second language and one in five has some form of serious health complaint – factors which complicate already stressful proceedings.

Every month, PSU volunteers help over 3,000 people who would otherwise be alone at court. This free service is provided by volunteers who see people immediately, as well as by appointment.

PSU volunteers help each person for as long as they need. It costs the PSU less than £25 for a volunteer to be there for someone during one of the most stressful times of their life.
