Katie Derham presents a week featuring performances by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, an opera matinee by Nielsen and unprecedented live music events and simulcasts with the BBC CO, the British Paraorchestra and the BBC NOW to mark the inaugural BBC Music Day this Friday.

Today, a recent concert recorded in Ayr Town Hall of symphonies by Mendelssohn and Beethoven with a Concertino for trombone by Mendelssohn?s friend and collaborator, the virtuoso violinist Ferdinand David with Simon Johnson, BBCSSO?s principal trombone as soloist. Plus Stravinsky?s neoclassical ?ballet in three deals? Jeu de cartes and the six Humoresques for violin & orchestra by Sibelius, heard here as one continuous suite as the composer originally intended. Stefan Jackiw makes his debut with the orchestra in these technically challenging and enchanting works.
