120, 421 short stories written by children aged between 5 and 13 as a result of the 500-word competition run by this programme. This is so massive that it influences none other than the Oxford University Almighty Press which informs me that words I’ve only just added to my vocabulary, words like email, mobile and Facebook, are on the way out, shoved out of the nest by cuckoos called Instagram, Snapchat and emoji. I hurl my self-pitying cry to the heavens: I’m never going to catch up!

It’s light years from the time when my professor at university told me how, when he was a student, the same Oxford University Press, then compiling its famous dictionary, had only got as far as the letter S. That was a work built on historical evidence – a word had to have a proven identity in the history of the language before it earned itself a place between those hallowed covers. These days, it seems more a matter of easy come, easy go. It’s today and even tomorrow that writes the agenda and fills our dictionaries.

“I am Alpha and Omega,” said Jesus; “the beginning and the end”. Here today and still here tomorrow. I like the idea of change, I really do. But I also love things that don’t change. I need to be anchored, to belong, #to have some fixed points. A hymn we Methodists sing speaks of thanking God for all that is past and trusting him for all that’s to come. That’s my line. And there’s that ancient prayer asking for the serenity to accept the things we can’t change, as well as courage to change the things we can, and #the wisdom to know the difference. Exactly.

That said, it’s back to the real world – the world of YouTube hits, shares and likes. How I’d love to be the very model of a modern technological.
