Part 1

The identities of the bodies of two murdered men, found floating in a life raft off the Swedish coast, are determined with the help of Latvian police officer Karlis Liepa, who tells Wallander that they are almost certainly the victims of the Russian mafia. When no further clues can be determined Liepa returns home, but Wallander is shaken by a fax almost as soon as his newly-acquired friend has got back to Riga.
