Ann Radcliffe's fourth novel 'The Mysteries of Udolpho' was published 1794.

It follows the fortunes of Emily St Aubert who has to endure the death of her father, supernatural terrors in a gloomy castle and the machinations of an Italian brigand. This quintessential Gothic novel, along with Radcliffe's 'The Romance of the Forest' plays a prominent role in Jane Austen's 'Northanger Abbey'.

Dramatised in two parts by Catherine Czerkawska.
