Living Paintings

Living Paintings provides a FREE library of tactile and audio books for blind and partially sighted people in the UK. These Touch to See books bring the visual world to life through the senses of touch and hearing. With them, blind children learn to read, are supported in lessons at school, take up new interests and simply get more out of life. We currently lend, completely free of charge, to 5,000 children across the UK, who can borrow books at home and at school.

Jim Carter has been working with Living Paintings for over 12 years. Reading bedtime stories was a joy he shared with his daughter, and he wanted to bring that delight in pictures, books and reading to blind and partially sighted children like Declan, below.

Discovering the excitement of pictures, books and reading

Discovering the excitement of pictures, books and reading
Declan, 11, is blind and our Touch to See picture books make him smile, “..the description on the audio and the colourful tactile pictures make the book feel much more real. It’s a lot more exciting for children like me who are blind, to have a book like this.”

Inspiring a love of books and storytelling

Inspiring a love of books and storytelling
Jodee, 8, was born blind but our Touch to See picture books are a vital part of her everyday life. Her mum says, “Jodee enjoys listening to the audio descriptions as she finds it the easiest way to learn, the richly descriptive language helps her discover new words and inspire her own storytelling.”

Born blind but learning to read with Living Paintings

Born blind but learning to read with Living Paintings
Louie, 8, was born blind. Our library of Touch to See books have helped him learn Braille and he enjoys feeling the tactile pictures too, “…they bring the story to life even though I can’t see …the pictures are raised so I can feel them with my fingers.”

Exploring the visual world with Touch to See images

Exploring the visual world with Touch to See images
Luca, 16, is blind but he’s able to explore the visual world and learn about topics with our Touch to See non-fiction books, “Living Paintings has taught me how to see with my fingers and paint pictures in my mind”.
