Concern Universal

There are now over 56,375 families in Malawi using a ‘Flower Pot’ stove thanks to Concern Universal, an international development charity based in Hereford, UK. We are leading a national programme to help get 2 million fuel-efficient ‘flower-pot’ stoves out to rural families by 2020. These stoves allow women and children to spend more time at work or at school, they reduce the amount of deadly smoke inhaled, help save wood and encourage tree planting.

With nine country programmes across Africa, Asia and Latin America, we find long-term solutions to poverty. Reaching over 2 million people each year, other projects include; providing boreholes for safe water, training families to grow enough food, providing micro-finance loans in rural villages and irrigation schemes for drought areas. These are just some of over a hundred projects that Concern Universal implements to help families living in extreme poverty around the world.

As the flowerpot stoves use such a small amount of wood, many women use more than one stove at a time to allow them to boil water and cook food.

Concern Universal trained groups of women in Mbengo village, Balaka, how to mould clay into ‘sausage’ shapes, before using the moulds to produce stoves to a carefully tested template.
