Binyavanga Wainaina - Kenyan Author

Stephen Sackur speaks to the late Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina, who revealed his homosexuality at a time when a host of African countries are criminalising and persecuting homosexuals.

Kenya's supreme court is about to decide whether to decriminalise homosexuality. It’s a decision which will be keenly watched across Africa where dozens of countries still have anti-gay legislation. One of the most prominent gay voices in Kenya was the award-winning writer, Binyavanga Wainaina, who's just died aged 48. HARDtalk spoke to Wainaina in 2014 after he went public about his sexuality. He was at the centre of the Africa wide debate about freedom, identity and culture. I asked him if his stand was changing hearts and minds?
