Martin McGuinness criticised after saying the IRA never deliberately targeted civilians

Martin McGuinness has been criticised after saying the IRA could have "killed thousands on the streets of London and in Northern Ireland" during the Troubles.

The deputy First Minister made the remark during a debate at the Oxford Union on Tuesday night. Mr McGuinness also insisted that civilians died where the IRA made "huge mistakes" in operations that went wrong, but they had not been deliberately targeted.

The debate was part of an event hosted by al-Jazeera TV. The debate had three parts. Those included a look at Mr McGuinness' past, a session on why he did what he did and a look at his work in conflict resolution.

There was also a question and answer session with a panel which included an Israeli negotiator and a Hamas supporter and the audience.

Victor Barker, whose 12 year old son James was killed in the Omagh attack, was at the event. He says although McGuinness has played a key role in ending the violence here, he still needs to face up to his past and admit his involvement.

Did anybody watch "Hector and Stephen Break for the Border" last night? If you didn't see it Stephen and Hector Ó Eochagáin, his RTE counterpart, traded places. He came up here to learn all about Northern Ireland and Stephen sneaked over the border to get a taste of life down south.

On this morning's show they relived some of the most memorable moments of their Irish adventure.
