Donald Macleod introduces some of the works Dvorák wrote during his stay in America including two which famously attracted nicknames associated with his temporary home.
In 1892 Dvorák embarked on a trip to the USA where he?d been appointed Director of the National Conservatory of Music in New York. He was asked to undertake the formidable task of helping found a national identity for American music and became fascinated by the indigenous melodies of its diverse peoples. Donald Macleod introduces a string quartet written during his summer holiday in the little Bohemian settlement at Spillville in the American mid-west, plus the best known of all his symphonies, named after his temporary home.
