UKIP have performed strongly in local elections that have been counting during the night.

Labour have retained the South Shields parliamentary seat, vacated by the former Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Emma Lewell-Buck won with a reduced majority of 6,000 over the UK Independence Party, which beat the Conservatives into third place.

UKIP have also performed strongly in the local elections that have been counting throughout the night. The Conservatives have lost Gloucestershire and Lincolnshire to "no overall control", but retain control of Essex council with a reduced majority.
