At this stage of last year's championship, Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke battled tricky conditions to move one-shot clear of the field following a round of 69. It proved to be a lead he would not relinquish, as he went on to lift the Claret Jug amidst emotional scenes at Royal St George's in Sandwich.

This is the first time the championship has been held on this Lancashire links course since 2001 when America's David Duval was crowned champion.
