Darren Clarke was last year's champion, winning by three strokes ahead of Americans Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson.
The Northern Irishman was a hugely popular winner, and the large crowds that are expected at the Lancashire links course will be hopeful of witnessing another victory by a British player. The only home winner of the Open at Lytham was Tony Jacklin back in 1969.
