Polish economy

Poland seem to be immune to the global and European financial crisis, with a high growth rate. This week, against a background of doom and gloom affecting other European economies, we ask why. We meet those returning from other European countries with savings and expertise, and examine how they are contributing to the economic growth. We also find out how EU funds are helping to aid growth, with investment in areas such as infrastructure projects. Is it luck or good judgement that has left Poland in this currently favourable position?

Slovenia announced its independence 20 years ago. After a short war with Yugoslav forces Slovenia was recognised as a separate country, and it made the transition from Communism to democracy and self-government. With political problems emerging in Slovenia recently, however, some in the country ask whether enough advantage has been taken of the opportunities which independence brought.
