Having grown up under the spell of 1980s television, Mitchell found his comedy soulmate in Robert Webb at a Footlights audition in Cambridge. Mitchell and Webb became established in fringe theatre and radio before That Mitchell and Webb Sound transferred to television to critical acclaim.

Mitchell's performance as Mark Corrigan in Channel Four's Peep Show cemented his position as a comic actor before going on to make his feature film debut with Webb in Magicians. He has remained loyal to his beloved small screen as a panel show regular and as co-host of the satirical series 10 O'Clock Live.
