With that in mind, Toby Buckland has ideas for a scented display and recommends varieties of sweet-smelling bedding plants and bulbs - perfect for planting alongside garden paths.

Seasonal interest is also on Joe Swift's mind when he selects and plants wall shrubs in his small family garden, which will give colour, perfume and evergreen structure all year round.

Carol Klein investigates the rose family and tracks down the unlikely relatives which are heavy with fruit, berries and hips at this time of year.
