From the Royal Albert Hall. The BBC Symphony Orchestra's Prom with principal guest conductor David Robertson concludes with a performance of Sibelius's Symphony No 2 in D.
BBC PROMS 2010
Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London
Presented by Andrew McGregor
The BBC Symphony Orchestra's Principal Guest Conductor, David Robertson, conducts two enduring works by composers who fashioned a new aesthetic out of Romantic roots, and the world premiere of a new commission in his 50th-birthday year from jazz-inspired Mark-Anthony Turnage, who has resolved not to write 'an old man's piece'!
The expansive melodies and edgy pace of centenary composer Samuel Barber are at their most powerful in the Violin Concerto, played here by Israeli-American virtuoso Gil Shaham. Sibelius's Second Symphony traces a path from terse drama to great affirmation.
