The traditional Montreal venue makes a welcome return to the Formula 1 calendar. The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve is a particular favourite of 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton; he claimed his second successive pole position at the venue two years ago, beating Robert Kubica's time with a last-gasp flying lap.

However, there was controversy during qualifying in 2008, with drivers complaining that the track surface had started to break up. Organisers were forced to carry out resurfacing work in between qualifying and the race itself.
