Across the centuries leading musicians, at home and abroad, have demonstrated their versatility in fulfilling dual roles as composers-conductors, conductor-performers or performer-composers with great success. In today's Afternoon on 3, Louise Fryer celebrates the accomplishments of figures who have met these criteria, including Eric Coates, Benjamin Britten and Richard Strauss, together with the contemporary Scottish composer-conductor James MacMillan.
