Huey Morgan
Huey Morgan plays an eclectic mix of music from the past six decades, spanning rock, rap, reggae, blues, disco, soul and Latino. He also chats to singer Regina Spektor.
With his motto "if it's cool, I'll play it", Fun Lovin' Criminal Huey Morgan plays an eclectic mix of the best music from the past six decades, spanning rock, rap, reggae, blues, disco, soul and Latino. Inspired by his New York upbringing and his experiences as a musician, Huey accompanies his playlist with personal anecdotes and stories told in his inimitable laid-back style.
For this Radio 2 special Huey meets a fellow New Yorker, the quirky chanteuse Regina Spektor. Growing up in the Soviet Union, Regina trained as a concert pianist and then moved to the Bronx in New York at the age of nine with her family, where she was exposed to rock, hip hop and Latin music. She became a part of the Lower East-Side anti-folk scene in the late-90s, alongside the Moldy Peaches and Ben Kweller, and released her first solo album in 2001.
Her fifth release this year was accompanied by a hectic world tour, feted festival appearances, while a sold-out crowd enjoyed her set in hushed reverence at her Serpentine Session in Hyde Park. Huey talks to Regina about achieving mainstream and critical success; their shared love of New York; touring with The Strokes and the Kings of Leon; working with Jeff Lynne on her new album; and her plans are for 2010.
Huey also brings back his School Britannia feature, where he asks listeners to educate him in British music, and he invites one of his musical peers to share a rare record from their personal collection in Sharing Is Caring.
You can hear The Huey Morgan Show on BBC 6 Music every Sunday at 2.00pm.
