Jill Douglas presents coverage of the women's road race at the 2009 World Championships in Mendrisio in Switzerland.

Olympic champion Nicole Cooke will be aiming to defend the world title she won for the first time in Varese in Italy in 2008. The Welsh rider clinched her 10th British title in June and will be among the favourites to win the famous rainbow jersey on the 77-mile course, which starts and finishes in the picturesque surroundings of Mendrisio, just a few miles from the Italian border.
