Former champion Maria Sharapova bowed out on the fourth day of 2008's tournament, losing in straight sets to her fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva. The ex-world number one has had a miserable 12 months since then, spending much of it on the sidelines nursing a shoulder injury, but will still expect to get beyond this stage in 2009.
