The first of two Proms given by the visiting New York Philharmonic and its music director Lorin Maazel. They unveil a joint commission with the BBC by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, which the composers say 'celebrates the brilliance of the New York Philharmonic musicians, both singly and collectively'. This is followed by Gershwin's jazz-inspired Piano Concerto, with soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet.
