Alistair tries to hypnotise his brother and sister into being his slaves in an attempt to prove that they are crazy and he is not, little realising that he too was hypnotised at Ralph's birthday party. This is why he is behaving strangely whenever Pamela Whitby is around, why he is scared of flowers in the park, and why he ends up sitting in a tree with a dog that thinks it is a cat.
