Desperate Frederica Potter auditions for a play about Elizabeth I written by her father's colleague, the beautiful Alexander Wedderburn.

The Virgin in the Garden is the first of four AS Byatt novel adaptations chronicling the lives of the Potter family, set against the social and political landscape of England of 1953-1970.
